Samsung Galaxy J5, Galaxy J7 2016 Edition Smartphones to be Launched in India Today

Samsung is most likely to launch its two new smartphones at an event today – Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7 2016 editions – in the Indian market.

Last year, Samsung launched the 2015 models of the Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7 in India at Rs 11,999 and Rs 14,999 respectively. Going by the prices for 2016 models revealed for the China market, J5 is priced at KRW 290,000 (approximately Rs 17,000), while the Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016) has been priced at KRW 363,000 (approximately Rs 21,000).

Both smartphones pack in some interesting hardware and also a new design that features a metal frame. The bigger Galaxy J7 (2016) packs in a 5.5-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display sporting a pixel density of 402ppi. The same is powered by an octa-core processor (make not specified in the listing) and clocked at 1.6GHz with 3GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage. The smartphone supports microSD cards of up to 128GB in capacity.

The Galaxy J7 (2016) packs a larger 5.5-inch 720p Super AMOLED display, a faster 1.6 Ghz Quad Core SoC, 2GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapixel front camera with LED flash, 16GB of on-board storage, a larger 3,300 mAh battery, and will ship with Android 6.0 Marshmallow. It, too, will include NFC for mobile transactions using Samsung Pay.

There is a 13MP camera on the back and a 5MP front-facing camera. Both cameras feature an f/1.9 aperture lens and an LED flash. Coming to connectivity, we get 4G LTE bands, NFC, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth V4.1. The smartphone weighs in at 170 grams and packs in a 3300mAh battery.

Coming to the smaller Samsung Galaxy J5 (2016), it sports a 5.2-inch HD Super AMOLED display and comes powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM. There is a 13MP camera on the back and a 5MP camera up front. The phone weighs 159 grams and packs in a 3,100 mAh battery.

Google Analytics 360 Suite and its products

Google released a new version of its Google Analytics product, adding new features and bringing in existing offerings that previously worked separately. Marketers can use the suite to track and respond to their customers more seamlessly than ever before. Above all, it’s a response to the growing threat by Facebook.

The suite comes with the following six products. The first four are brand new, Google says. And if some of the details on these are vague, that’s by design. Google purposefully didn’t release details on many of these.

1. Google Audience Center 360 (beta)


This data management platform (DMP) helps marketers understand their customers and find more like them across channels, devices, and campaigns. It offers native integration with Google and DoubleClick, plus it’s open to third-party data providers and DSPs.

Significance: This could be the strongest update of the announcement. Facebook launched its Atlas product last year, built on social profile data that’s become hugely valuable. Google doesn’t have the profile data that Facebook has built, and it’s clearly been threatened by becoming an underdog in user data for the first time. But Google does have dominance in search traffic and data, and its Android platform is the biggest operating system in mobile. Finally, it has Gmail, through which it can build audiences and segments to be marketed to.

When it comes to impact on Adobe or Oracle, that remains to be seen. Google is a marketing and ad company, Adobe is a content-focused company, and Oracle is trying to serve enterprise with everything. There are overlaps, but each offer different use cases. With this announcement, Google is definitely getting more competitive for enterprise customers.

2. Google Optimize 360 (beta)


This website testing and personalization product helps marketers deliver better experiences. Marketers can show consumers multiple variations of their site and then choose the version that works best for each audience.

Significance: At first, this may look like a rebrand of Google Experiments, which helped people track analytics behind different A/B test pages. But that was done essentially through a tag, in a very manual way. Optimize does all of the work of setting up a real A/B test from end-to-end. You can literally drag comps of a site (without needing to know coding) into the product and test them out with live users.


By adding this feature and the Data Studio feature below, Google could be taking a lot of work away from A/B testing tools Optimizely and other personalization tools. It’s also incorporating customization and data visualization — creating a seamless stack that could spark consolidation in the industry. Visualization of data is very difficult to do within Optimizely. And if you have to switch to a tool like Tableau for data visualization, that becomes yet another piece to connect to your product stack. Why bother, if you can get it all from Google?

Having multiple tools from many vendors can also affect your IT development time, and even stability: If one tool goes down, and other tools that are dependent on it also go down, it’s often hard to find the cause of failure.

That said, Google’s A/B testing still doesn’t appear to match the full functionality of Optimizely for split testing.

3. Google Data Studio 360 (beta)


This new data analysis and visualization product integrates data across all suite products and other data sources — turning it into interactive reports and dashboards. Built-in real-time collaboration and sharing is based on Google Docs technology.

Significance: Marketers will find Data Studio helpful because they need to constantly make data imagery for briefings, reports, and decks. Google hasn’t done this before. In some ways, the product looks like a competitor to Cyfe or Geckoboard. Data visualization dashboards are hot right now, and a lot of innovation and venture dollars have been invested here. This could spell trouble for some of the newer entrants. The question is whether the new Google visualizations are deep enough to seriously affect a player like Tableau. This is something we haven’t looked at yet.

4. Google Tag Manager 360


Built from Google’s tag management product, this offers enterprise marketers a simplified way to gather site information (all those tiny bits of code) and powerful APIs to increase data accuracy and streamline workflows, to allow them to move faster and make decisions with confidence.

Significance: This was based on a small feature in GA, but was never a fully built-out and standalone product.

5. Google Analytics 360, rebrand of GA Premium


Google said it will roll out “exciting” new capabilities throughout the next couple of months as investments continue to grow. Sources are telling VentureBeat to wait until Google’s I/O event for more news. GA 360 will serve as the measurement centerpiece by analyzing customer data from all touchpoints and integrating with its ad products to drive marketing effectiveness, Google said.

Significance: This is really just a rebrand of GA Premium — not much new here. But Google really is the king of analytics.

6. Google Attribution 360, rebrand of Adometry


Google says this has been rebuilt from the “ground up” to help advertisers value marketing investments and allocate budgets with confidence. Marketers can analyze performance across all channels, devices, and systems to achieve their most effective marketing mix. VentureBeat’s understanding, though, is that Google still heavily relies on Tune and Kochava for some mobile attribution capabilities. Google’s main strength has been attribution for display advertising.

In the past year or two, Google had already released several of the features of what today is being branded Google Analytics 360 Suite. But the new release debuts several new features, including most significantly what appears to be a data management platform (DMP) to manage user profile data across a company’s site — a critical tool for large companies. This is where Facebook has come on very strong, particularly in the explosive mobile advertising market.

Google has brought these features into one place, giving enterprise-size marketers a much more powerful feedback loop: These marketers can now get data about customers coming to their site and respond more easily in real time with content that is specialized for those visitors.

With the new features, Google also appears to be encroaching on the territory of several big players in the enterprise data cloud or DMP space — for example, Oracle and Adobe. It also steps into A/B testing, where Optimizely is dominant, and data visualization, where Tableau has seen tremendous growth.


Google’s moves are significant, because it has the advertising reach and infrastructure scale to undermine many of these other players. Google said it’s applying the same infrastructure that allows it to handle billions and billions of daily search queries — generating answers before users even finish typing — to give enterprise marketers similar functionality. In this case, it means allowing marketers to provide their customers with the content, offers, or products that users are likely looking for, based on those customers’ past behaviors.

Facebook’s growing threat


The move is also significant because Facebook continues to grow in mobile, now threatening Google’s longtime dominance in display advertising. Google has chugged along with many of its analytics products for years, but has never pulled them together to offer a powerful suite for marketers.

Jon Cifuentes, an analyst at VB Insight, VentureBeat’s research arm, agreed: “Google is above all a marketing and advertising company — with channel dominance in search, email, display — with mobile and display threatened for the first time in years with Facebook, especially around mobile. It makes sense for them to beef up audience tracking.”

Google cited Pawan Divakarla, who leads analytics at Ohio-based Progressive Insurance, as an example of the suite’s significance:

“The Google Analytics 360 Suite gave us the really big ah-­ha moment. When we launched our mobile app, it provided insurance quotes. But after looking at the data, we saw people were attempting to buy insurance. So, we shifted our mobile strategy to offer ecommerce. Google gave us that insight,” Divakarla said in a canned quote in Google’s announcement.

The new suite certainly rivals Facebook in terms of tracking people across devices and channels. But more than that, it integrates with other products like AdWords, DoubleClick, and third-party platforms through an API.

One thing that is clear: This is an enterprise-grade product, and is priced as such. The existing product, Google Analytics Premium, has been priced at $150K/year, and Google acknowledges that this is the fee you’ll have to pay for one of the main products of the 360 suite. But you’ll have to then pay for additional products a la carte, and associated fees with increased usage, features and services, Google spokesman Joe Osborne told VentureBeat.

India's ban on Facebook's free service is an overreaction

What constitutes digital equality?

India’s national telecoms regulator thinks it knows, its national consultation on differential pricing for mobile data packages concluding that “zero rating” services, or offering them for free, is discriminatory. And over objections that zero rating practices create more opportunity for the 1 billion digitally disconnected, India has banned them.

This follows months of ferocious lobbying on both sides of the debate, focused around Facebook’s Free Basics offering. In India, as it has done in more than 30 other countries, Facebook has offered a curated, stripped-down internet experience called Free Basics consisting of Facebook itself, BBC News, local news and information, a few NGOs, and dozens of other low-bandwidth services.

Critics argued that the Facebook offering is a degraded internet experience specially marketed to the poor –hardly the ticket to digital equality. Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI)’s decision is viewed as a victory for open internet advocates who have been trying to get India to adopt US-style net neutrality rules. Dozens of small businesses seeking their own share of the internet audience also filed comments seeking this result.

Yet Facebook had argued that Free Basics would democratize the internet, bringing disconnected Indians online for the first time. And behind the policy debate, there is an internet land grab with big companies on both sides of zero rating vying to stake their claims to the disconnected.

Roslyn Layton, an academic who contributed to the TRAI consultation and has done research on the economic impact of zero rating, feels the decision is a setback for internet adoption and access in India. “This battle is essentially one between Google and Facebook for the future of India’s digital advertising market,” she said. “Facebook launched Free Basics and Google plans Android One, a low-cost smartphone bundled with Google apps. We should allow both models in the marketplace to compete.”

Carriers use zero rating as a loss-leader in the scramble for subscribers, hoping to get users to pay a little now, and more once they’re hooked online. For Facebook, Free Basics drives new users into the Facebook ecosystem. At the same time, the company is able to use the Free Basics platform to lure more third-party content providers onto Facebook’s servers, and so get a share of more ad revenue and user data.

Zero rating opponents, including Google, have their own plans to grab market share in the southern hemisphere, focusing on spreading the Android ecosystem and building wireless capability.

In late December, TRAI ordered Facebook’s telecom partner, Reliance, to shut down Free Basics until the regulator could take comment on the propriety of zero rating. This order followed the rapid mobilization of net neutrality advocates who succeeded in getting more than a million signatures on a petition demanding an end to Free Basics.

The claim is that zero rating is the same thing as net discrimination. India and the US, although not the EU, has banned “paid prioritization” at the network level as discriminatory, meaning that Facebook would be prohibited from paying Reliance for preferred (as in faster or better) network access.

Net neutrality advocates say that zero rating has the same effect as the banned network practices: some services get preferential access to consumers. This is true whether the service pays the carrier to be fee-exempt or whether there is no cash consideration, as in the Free Basics deal.

There are three related strands to this argument. First, consumers will naturally migrate to the free services, making it difficult for competitors and other new and often local entrants not part of the zero-rated bundle to break through.

And third, in the absence of sufficient carrier competition, carriers have an incentive to suppress bandwidth supply and increase prices for data packages outside of the zero-rated services.

China-India Mobile phone and Component Manufacturing Summit

More than 100 manufacturing comapnies from China have arrived to India to estimate the market conditions in an attempt to support and gain something from Narendra Modi's Make in India initiative. These Chinese manufacturers belongs to handset and component companies.

Mr. Wu, Founder and CEO of Mobile World (Shoujibao), Shenzhen said that the primary priority of this visit of the manufactirers is to understand the present situation and foreign investment conditions in Indian Market. In an interview with IANS, Wu told that these manufacturing companies want to invest in India and take part in Make in India campaign.

He also said that many companies are showing interest in Indian market after Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi's visit to China in last year. They are fascinated to his talks and goals of Make in India initiatives.

China-India Mobile phone and Component Manufacturing Summit will be held on January 13 at hotel Pullman, Aerocity, New Delhi which is aimed at establishment of robust Mobile Manufacturing Eco-System in India. This event is organized by The Indian Cellular Association (ICA) in association with Shoujibao (Mobile World).

Major Chinese manufacturing companies such as Gionee, Nuwei, Huawei, Sprocomm, Transsion, Huiye, Sinwoo, Nubia, Meizu, Vikin, HuaLong, Ramos, Mafe, Miki, Wind-Mobi, Poxiao, Camera King, Coolpad, Wingtech, Galaxy Core, Holitech, ZTE and Vivo are expected to attend this summit in New Delhi.

Along with these Chinese top players, Indian manufacturing companies such as Vodafone, Karbonn, Micromax, Lava, Spice and Intex are also expected to attend this event.



Fewer tech glitches in its self-driving cars: Google

The rate of failures in software of self-driving cars that Google developed was declining as technology was learning from its mistakes, in order to bring the tech company closer to its autonomous vehicle creation goal.

These self driving autonomous cars travelled 424,000 miles and had experienced 272 episodes in which the human test driver had to assume control of the vehicle which is called disengagement, when the autonomous technology failed.

"As we continue to develop and refine the self-driving software, we are seeing fewer disengagements" despite more miles driven, Google said in a 33-page report submitted by law to the California Department of Motor Vehicles on Dec. 31.

California regulations call for test drivers and steering wheels in autonomous vehicles.

Google's development of self-driving cars has spurred outsized interest around the world, but the company best known for search has disclosed little about its strategy, business plans or ultimate goals.

Without the need to watch the road, people in cars will talk on phones, watch entertainment, purchase consumer goods, among many other options, providing valuable data to Google.

The report, covering the period Sept. 24, 2014, when Google began testing on roads of Palo Alto, California, to Nov. 30, 2015, found disengagements occurred about every 785 miles in the fourth quarter of 2014. A year later, that had expanded to 5,318 miles between episodes.

Eighty-nine percent of disengagements occurred on city streets, where more obstacles and stop-and-go traffic make autonomous driving more difficult.

Project director Chris Urmson said Google deliberately tests cars in different weather and times of the day, which explained why some months saw more episodes than others.

Google, a unit of Alphabet Inc, said it kept the threshold for measuring disengagements low to gather as much data as possible to refine the technology.

There were another 69 episodes in which the test driver chose to take control of the vehicle rather than the car signaling to the driver to take control.

Using a simulator to replay the situation, Google found in 13 of these instances its cars would have hit another object had the test driver not taken control. Google said two involved traffic cones, and three were due to "another driver's reckless behavior."

Urmson said the California DMV had not seen the report when it issued draft rules in December restricting how autonomous vehicles could operate for the next three years.

Some highlights from CES 2016

LAS VEGAS — Every January, people flock to Las Vegas to see demonstration of new technology at the annual Consumer Electronics Show. Here are a few of the highlights of CES 2016:

 CHEVROLET BOLT EV

Chevy demonstrated the first production version of their new electric vehicle at the show. The most notable thing about the new car is that they are promising a range of more than 200 miles on a full charge. They say that the price should come in below $30,000 when you factor in government tax credits. More information will be released at next week's Detroit Autor Show, but overall the new vehicle looks very promising.

KIA SOUL EV


Another big automotive advancement that was shown off was a new self-driving version of the KIA Soul. While it has not been tested in live traffic situations yet, the front end camera which picks up objects on the road to guide the vehicle through traffic has been tested on closed roads. KIA put together a fun little 360 degree action movie to demonstrate the technology.

OCULUS RIFT


As a video gamer, this virtual reality technology has been on my radar for quite some time. At CES, they finally announced that the final product will cost $599. While they did not give a firm release date, they said they should begin fulfilling pre-orders (which you can place now) sometime in March. While there are a few other VR headsets coming out, including the already released Samsung Gear, Oculus has the backing of Facebook..

360 DEGREE VIDEO


Two big commercial camera companies, Nikon and GoPro, announced plans to release 360 degree video cameras. The KeyMission 360 would be Nikon's first every action camera and promises to record 360 degree video in 4K. GoPro already has a spherical camera rig that is meant for professional photographers due to price, but they're intending to release a more casual consumer version of the product. This type of video will become more important once VR hits fully in 2016.

Technology and social media are in driver’s seat for marketing in 2016

As technology and social media continue to evolve, companies are investing more in educating themselves on changes in the influential sector, a new locally conducted nationwide survey shows. AKHIA, a Hudson marketing and business integration firm, led an online survey in December to examine strategies, trends and considerations for U.S. companies of all sizes in different industries to begin planning for 2016.

The results showed a push to keep apace with technology and focus spending on newer media. Forty percent of survey respondents said they plan to invest in communication technologies such as marketing automation, customer relationship management or other analytics tools in the near future. The increase in technology budgeting doesn’t stop there. In fact, four out of the five areas in which companies plan to increase spending involve strictly technology, including web and digital strategy, search engine optimization and communication technologies.

The survey, conducted by TRIAD Research Group, an independent market research firm based in Cleveland, featured 225 marketing and communications professionals from different segments, including health care, manufacturing and financial services.

Ben Brugler, AKHIA’s president, said the results were more validating than surprising. “This is exactly in line with what we were talking about with our clients,” Brugler said. These results go hand-in-hand with barriers that industries are shown to face.

According to the survey, 37 percent of companies identified poor infrastructure for collecting and analyzing data as their greatest barrier to measuring success, which is partially related to a lack of proper technology.

“What’s most telling about these results is that implementing the right systems and having the right people in place to not only track, but analyze data will be critical in the next five years,” the AKHIA report concluded.

What’s more, three out of the five areas respondents planned to invest in training were centered on technology as well. The first and most prominent was social media strategy, while digital marketing strategy and digital paid media trailed behind.

"That was our thinking, that marketing was going to be investing a lot in technology and digital databases, things that would be affecting their job,” Brugler said. “We were seeing it even with our own clients." A new reality.

As technology becomes more of a normality for businesses, one specific facet is beginning to show its face, and it doesn’t look like the trend is going to slow down anytime soon.

In AKHIA’s survey, social media reigned as the biggest marketing trend affecting businesses. The survey found 41 percent of companies will definitely or probably increase spending for nontraditional advertising, such as social and banner ads.

At the same time, 28 percent of companies will definitely or probably decrease spending on traditional forms of advertising in the next five years, such as print, billboard and sponsorships. Social media was also the main thing businesses wanted to educate themselves on in the next one to two years to do their jobs more effectively.
